Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons is taking offense with a low block thrown at New York Giants defense end Kayvon Thibodeaux.
The former Penn State standout shared his thoughts about that sequence on Twitter, stating:
“I don’t why cutting is still allowed in the NFL!!... Let’s play ball, bro! I hate to see that shit man!”
The league’s ruling on the low block has been debated for decades. This approach became popular during the 1980s and 1990s when tight ends and pulling offensive linemen used it to take out bigger defenders. They often use it in wide zone schemes wherein defensive linemen or linebackers have the luxury of space to move around.
Last May, the NFL incorporated in its rulebook that blocks below the waist made by “offensive and defensive players on scrimmage downs when contact occurs beyond five yards on either side of the line of scrimmage and more than two yards outside of either offensive tackle” are prohibited.
Parsons was the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year last season after finishing with 64 solo tackles, 13 sacks, three forced fumbles, and three passes defended. He also earned a Pro Bowl and a First-Team All-Pro selection.
Parsons and the Cowboys will open the 2022 NFL season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 11. He will also appear on FOX Sports’ “Undisputed: Skip and Shannon” every Tuesday throughout the season.
